Thanks for the response on "Thin Hoof Walls." Further explanation: The
horse that has thin hoof walls - on the sides only - has been trimmed and
shod regularly and has been on a good diet with vitamin supplement. She's
been competing for the past two years - 975 miles to date.
In September the farrier "hot nailed" her - most likely because the walls
were so thin. Several attempts were made to bring her back to competition
this fall but her foot hadn't healed sufficiently. She was finally started
on Biotin II, and last week the farrier (a new one - but not because of the
hot nail) trimmed her feet and showed me that the nail hole still hadn't
grown out totally. (She is not lame now, and I don't want to risk her
becoming lame by riding her.) The new farrier advised the use of Farrier's
Choice which I've gotten her on now. And, yes, there is less biotin in
Farrier's Choice than in Biotin II.
So, question - can I also give her Biotin II at the same time as Farrier's
Choice? Does anyone have any more feedback as to how I can improve the hoof
wall and what I can do to maintain sufficient side walls? Could improper
balanced shoeing attributed to the problem?
