I used to board at a stable where the "found" livestock were held.
The animals that are held are kept for 30 days before they go to the
101 auction. The owners are billed $250 per animal for the pick-up; then
$10 per day for the holding time.
In Santa Clara County, the horses are treated differently than the other
livestock. If noone claims the horses, the Humane Society adopts them out.
A veterinarian first checks the horse over (no x-rays or anything beyond that).
Shots and wormer are administers, feet trimmed, if needed. Then they are
available for $250, ponies are less - $150 I think. During the time that
I boarded at that stable (about 3 years), only a couple of owners didn't turn
up - for old horses, kinda sad.
