The trail in question is very narrow in places and is not conducive to safe
biking with or without other trail users present. As a regular trail user in
the Santa Monicas, let me just say that there are innumerable trails that we
share with hikers, bikers, and even rude dogs that are off leash and chase
us. There are clearly differences in the usability of trails, and narrow,
rocky or excessively steep trails are not safe venues for bikes. As a member
of our local MSAR (Mounted Search and Rescue) I would be none to pleased to
have to be resuing from remote areas bikers who were on trails either
forbidden to them or simply hazardous. Accidents happen. But allowing wheels
vehicles on certain trails is asking for one. There are also trails not too
safe for horses as well, and most people choose to stay off of them. The
bottom line here is that the trail in question is not conducive to multi use
nor is it safe for the general population on bikes at any time due to its
structure. The person who posted the original message does indeed know
whereof she speaks and I for one am glad the word is out. Please remember,
most bikers, equestrians and hikers are VERY courteous and safe. most people
don't want to get hurt. But most people also don't want to get hurt by other
people, either, and certain trails just ask for injury. So.... go with
whatever you think. I like to err on the side of caution. That's all folks!
