Inverted respiratory rates occur during and immediately after exercise. If
you run, you breath faster, so does a horse. Inversions at rest just do not
occur unless a horse is sick or VERY hot. Yes, resting respiration is 6 to
20 (varies) as resting heart rate is 24 to 48 (generally). At work, it is
common for heart rates to continue at 120 to 140 and under stress 180 and
under extreme stress up to 240!! The respiration that exceeds the heartrate,
such as 48 pulse with 60 respiration IS an inversion, but not necessarily
bad. It may be very hot. I like to chose horses that do NOT invert because
that horse has a good internal cooling system (that's why arabs are so good).
