Do you give electrolytes during the ride?
Do you have a salt block available for the horse prior to the
ride (the night before at the trailer)?
Yes potassium will cause all kinds of heart related problems.
By making sure that the horse receives his normal salt while
tied to the trailer, and that the horse has an electrolyte
supplement available during the ride, you can eliminate the
problem.
The research I have seen says that electrolytes at the start
of the ride and every 12-15 miles is required to maintain
the electrolyte balance. Which electrolyte suppliment is
discussed here regularly (and no "best" one has ever been
decided).
