This is an interesting topic. At the AERC convention last Jan, there was a
three hour presentation on the work done by Univ of Guelph on electrolytes
in endurance horses. Evidence indicated that the maximun electrolyte loss
was during the first 20 miles of a ride.

One of the issues considered was preloading. There was evidence that
those horses that were preloaded had a better electolyte balance after the
first 20 miles than those that didn't. The researched would not make any
interpertation of this data (in fact there were no pratical reccomendations
at all coming from this body of work).

Electrolyte preloading would be an interesting subject to discuss.
