Marisa,
Braiding is what I do for my long horse mane, keeps it untangled.
I know how cold it is, here in Spokane it's colder. After a good workout,
get some burlap bags opened up, layer them over his back, and place a wool
blanket over that to help keep the body heat in and help evaporate the
sweat. I take hand towels and rub down the belly to make sure it gets most
of the moisture off and let him stand with this blanket setup for 20+
minutes, enough to get him well cooled off and most of the wet out. I have a
friend who uses her hair dryer,that depends on your horse. :-)

There are winter cleaners (check your mail order catalogs)out there for
cleaning your horses coat, spray it on and rub it out, but it is much better
to leave the oils in the coat and just brush him well, leave the dirt and
oil in, esp. if he's not being blanketed, since it helps keep him more
insulated from the cold.

Alittle dirt isn't bad...
