[endurance] Aly's girth!

Hi all!
HOpe you had a good weekend! I DID. I rode ALy on a 25 again today, and
tried soaking the girth in water, it was pretty stiff. I also soaked down
his girth area, andespecially where it chafes/scurfs. HE had a little scurf
from last week but nothing major (I never made it out there with Betadine)
ANyway, he was an angel on trail, and we cut 20 minutes off our ride time.
We are going to be slow at the Fort Valley (his first 50) but I think we
will do fine if we trot where and when we can and walk other times. I hope I
get the turtle award! (at least)

Anyway, i soaked his girth area with Betadine today when I got back, and
cleaned him up pretty well there. I guess I will know how it is next week.
He is less tender there than he has been. I also ordered a neoprene girth,
hopefully that will make a difference.

If someone sees Teddy Lancaster, tell her to bring her red biothane
halter/bridles!! I am finally going to get one at the Fort Valley if she's
there (:))

In case you were wondering... it was pretty warm today, that's the only
reason I got him wet...I can't see doing all that when it's freezing
outside. Maybe he'll toughen up. What kinds of pads do your farriers use
under the shoes (for those with pads)? Aly goes slow the first ten miles and
always seems to brighten up once we get out of the woods... I am going to
try pads and see if he just doesn't like the rocks or if he is just being
lazy because he's bored in there??? They never bothered him last year much,
but he hasn't been doing a whole lot this year. HE is very sound, especially
out on the road. Excellent road trot.

ANyway, all suggestions welcome-I do my own farrying and was mostly
wondering if there was any particular brand anyone preferred... I use polo
plates on him, as they are naturally rolled and seem to give him plenty of
grab when he needs it, but they also have the normal "slide" associated with
them when he does extended trot. SO far, no problems. He has been in those
for about 3 years now (or barefoot or in outer rims for track).

All of the comments I have been getting have helped trmendously, so I expect
I ought to have everything perfect (:) ) by the end of the year! I am kind
of trying things one at a time to see how it goes. He is a pretty good
horse-when something makes him feel better, he performs better instantly.
Thank you
Gwen
