We were luckin Opal where we live, a little rain and about 40 mph winds.
At noon yesterday Opal had sustained winds at 150 a category four, like
Andrew, and growing stronger. Luckly it hit the cooler waters of the
Northern gulf and weakened before it hit land. It was a cat III when it
hit (125 mph winds). But that is enough to do sever damage. When Andrew
hit the horses took a real beating, but so did the humans It was awful.
We did learn a lot from Andrew and the Sunshine State Horse Council has
publiched emergancy management information on what to do in these
situtations. In fact, because of Andrew, Sarasota county - along with many
other counties, has a emergency procedures for agricultureal areas and
large animals. Hopefully the folks on the Gulf coast took the proper
precautions with Opal and the damage to our equine friends will be minimal.
