[endurance] Heals Breaking Down?

Could someone please tell me what it looks like when heels are "breaking
down"? I noticed today that my mare's back heels have a sort of "gap"
between the shoe and hoof (not sure how to describe it). It looks kind
of "chipped up", and there's a sort of soft spot. I've never noticed it
before. Is this the kind of thing that endurance riders have to know
more than their farriers about??
