Hi Sue;
I need an explanation of DIY stables?
Also in discussing mud fever, etc. My horse got a moderate case
last year and it took 6 months to get rid of. I tried all sorts of
remedies. What works for me now is simple rubbing alcohol. The key for
my horse is to apply it to his feet (the white socks) after every
moderate ride and anytime his feet get mud caked on them. I also apply
it after rains or his time in wet pastures. If I let the scratches get
started then it takes a long time to cure. I believe it is a
combination fungus and bacterial infection. I tried Desitin and triple
antibiotics and at first they seemed to help. But after a few days it
seemed to break out again. I think the fungus thrived under the topical
ointments.
Most people I have talked to who feel they have sucessfully handled
scratches use some sort of a drying agent.
Regarding how I ride, I mostly hover now. I don't see very many
people sitting on their horses except at the walk. Sometimes I post but
for some reason not as often as I use to.
