Subject: Stolen Horse
A friend had her horse stolen here in Colorado. The horse is a 13 year old
white Arabian gelding. Horse has a freeze brand. The man who stole horse is
named Chad, is 22 years old, blond hair and blue eyes. He is about 5'11".
They know about him because he tried to steal her other horse at same time -
other horse bucked him off and came home with a lot of his personal
belongings attached to the saddle.
Horse was last sighted in mountains west of Nederland, CO, on June 18.
Owner is getting some information that thief may have also stolen a rusty
white horse trailer and may be taking horse to Wyoming or Montana.
Brand inspectors have been notified. There is a $1000 reward for the safe
return of this horse.
If you should see anyone with a horse that fits this description, please
contact your local law enforcement. Boulder County sheriff at (303)441-4444
has the most detailed information about the theft.
I also check my e-mail at least twice a day. If you should see or hear of
this horse, please e-mail me at NederCO@aol.com.
Thanks.

Subject: Trailering Friends
I've been riding with the same group of friends for over two years. Some of
us have trailers and some don't. We all went to dinner a few months ago and
agreed that the driver would be paid $ .40 / mile and that would be divided
by the number of horses. Lately, we've been having some difference of
opinions on what is "fair". A couple of my friends-- one has a stock
trailer, one has a 3 horse slant--have recently decided that they want out of
the split. For example, if they haul 2 other horses, besides their own, the
owners of the other two horses would each pay the driver $ .20 / mile. The
driver pays nothing. It seems like no matter how we figure it, someone is
unhappy. I'm upset that our friendships are being jepoardized by financial
matters. I'd like to hear from some others, on how you handle the matter of
hauling other people in your trailer. I used to simply charge the person I
hauled 1/2 of the actual cost of the gas. Then, we all went to the mileage
thing, to be consistent amongst each other, and to get reimbursed for some of
the wear and tear on the truck and trailer. I could really use some input
here, and thanks, in advance!!

Subject: Re: Castle Rock 50 (long, with questions)
An electrolyte is a substance that dissociates into ions in solution or
when fused, thereby becoming electrically conducting. The more important
ones for endurance rider are Na+ (sodium) K+ (potassium), Ca++ (calcium),
Mg++ (magnesium) and Cl- (cloride). There was a good series of articles in
Endurance News by Dr. Frazier several years ago on the functioning of
electrolytes in the body.
Endurolytes is a brand name for a commercial product. Endurance rider
Jeannie Waldron, DVM was involved in the development of the product, and it
was developed with the endurance horse in mine. The main differences
between endurolytes and some of the home brew mixes is the source of the
Ca++ and Mg++. Endurolytes (if I remember correctly) uses calcium acetate
for its source of Ca++ and magnesium citrate as its source of Mg++. Both
of the these compounds are water soluble. In theory the are readily
absorbed into the system.
I have noticed a difference with my mare since I started using endurolytes.
Hope this helps.

I have 3-horse gooseneck and almost always take an extra passenger
or two. We do some pretty long hauls and I am happy to have the
company (plus she's my best buddy) and help with driving. I ask
to split the gas between how ever many of us there are. My feeling
is that I'd be going anyway, and honestly an extra horse won't
increase the expense that much! I feel fortunate to have a
reliable rig and its good to be able to help my friends out.
Can't see making too big a fuss over it!

Howdy!
Last night I checked out my dry electrolytes (that I'd ordered from VetLine
along with the tube Equilytes) and they were named "Equilyte" also...
I suspect that Endurolytes are a different recipe.
Truman, do you know who markets your Endurolytes? Is it VetLine?

I have always tried to not worry too much about the finances ,
assuming I am going along to the destination. I figure I would be
driving anyway, so I split the gas money between the people and
myself. Last week my riding partner did the food shopping for the
weekend, so I paid for the gas.
I do charge people if they ask me to haul their horse somewhere, like
maybe to another stable, to the vet, etc. It also depends on who it
is. If my friend (who takes care of my horse while I am away) needs a
ride somewhere, she gets it for free. I have never charged a mileage
rate, but maybe I should. I really got taken advantage of when I
offered to return the horse I was leasing to its stupid owner. I told
her I would bring him back do Fresno if she paid for the gas. I liked
the horse, so I did not feel too bad about it. She never paid me a
dime. Oh well.
But you do have a point- it feels wierd sometimes when people sort of
assume you will take them and their horse somewhere, and then not
offer to pay. I guess for me it really depends on the person.

I have worked out an agreement with a friend.
I'll trailer her where ever she needs, and almost whenever.
In return, she takes care of my critters when I'm on a business
trip. Since I live up a mountain, this means a lot to me.
Before I had a trailer, I'd just split the gas with who ever
had the trailer.

Dear Linda -
Congratulations to you too!!! I'm glad Shatirr recovered. Is he still
doing OK? Another horse in the barn where Tara lives finished 19th but
still isn't back to being himself.
Tara is a flea bitten grey (white), thin, unusually deep hearth
girth and can't bend her tail up at the dock so she carries it
straight, "like a flag," according to a friend.
I almost stood up at the Friday evening meeting & asked all the
endurance mail list folks there to raise their hands but I got cold
feet at the last minute.
I'm sure we were at the Swanton vet check at the same time & it is
frustrating because I would really like to meet you in person!
The next ride I'm going to do is the Eastern High Sierra Classic.
What about you?
Happy trails!

I think Laney has a great idea on how to spot the endurance mailing
list people at a ride. Someone either get up at the end of the riders
meeting and ask for a show of hands, or maybe get together for a few
minutes after the meeting. If people don't want to talk in front of a
crowd, I am sure the ride managers would be happy to make a little
anouncement for us.
We should definiatly do something at the endurance confrence this year
in Reno. It is in early March this year, but I am not sure of the
exact date. Maybe some kind of group party?
Another idea is some kind of button, patch, or something like that.
There is sort of a "universal" internet symbol used in a lot of
circles. The "@" sign, or "aat" sign, is used by some people for this
exact purpose. Would it be strange to wear a button with this symbol
on it at rides? Maybe a 1 or 2 inch white pin with the @ on it? If
people think it is a good idea, I will get a bunch made up and send
them to who ever wants one. I figure if Steph can put as much effort
into the home page as she does, other people should kick in. What
does everyone think?

I love the idea of a get-together in Reno! Count me in!
And I really like having a way of finding my net-buddies. It drives
me nuts to know that I probably know Laney, but don't know I know her...
know what I mean?? ;^)
Here's some other ideas about locating each other:
o Ask the number writer to draw an "@" sign on both horses shoulders
or under the rump number
o Come up with a group t-shirt (that is lots of work...)
o Pin a piece of paper with your address it to your back
o Tie a couple of ribbons (surveyor tape) to the truck antenna
o Draw an "@" sign on our foreheads with lipstick ;^)
I like the idea of a pin, but I would probably loose it. Something
like surveyor tape around the wrist may work... ribbons always catch
our eye anyway. And most ride managers have extra on hand, or one of
us can make a spool available at the sign-in table.
Any other ideas?

Subject: Meeting Netters
I've been lurking out here and have some comments on how to meet fellow
internet folks at rides:
How 'bout folks making up T-Shirts with a big "@" symbol on them in
addition to displaying the "@" in our truck windshield?
Also there is probably a number of folks with access to the internet but
don't know about the endurance group. I'm considering making up a flyer
to put out at rides that lists some of the more interesting equine sites
on the internet and tells a little about the endurance riders group. I
can see such a flyer as a real ice breaker at pre-ride meetings.
I've got a question for those discussing how to fairly divide travel cost
for those without trailers. What are the camping arrangements for the
trailerless travelers? Do they share the camper, bring their own tent,
or sleep in back of trailer? I would think if they're also sharing
someone's camper, the hauling fee ought to reflect that.
Just one person's opinion (;>.
