[RC] Heart rate monitor - JenI am no expert! I am a newbie endurance rider, in fact can't even call me true endurance as all I have done are LD. Pony was not suited to endurance (mostly tempermentally and heatwise!) I've got a HRM, a Garmin I got from redeeming Visa points. It's a great tool for training! Had all my training rides logged; time, miles, heartrates, routes, etc... Worked great to have in conjunction with a written diary. But never once used the heart rate function at a ride, at least not fully through the ride. It was a hassle; Often got mixed readings or false reading becasuse of the other HRMs; Worried about rubbing; Didn't want to be dependant on it. But having the GPS portion was awesome for rides. I always use it! And the battery lasted me 11 hours per charge. Only complaint about it was that the wrist band wasn't big enough in winter. It wouldn't fit over the 7 layers I wear! But I don't think it's essential to competition, just a handy tool for training. I liked it better than a scope, b/c it was quicker. I didn't have to jump down and run to pull out the scope. I had a better idea of exactly how fast her pulse dropped. Jen =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
