Like you suspect it's probably in regards to the GPS. I have used many of the cheaper Polar units and when I switched to Garmin I used both on my horse just for fun and they had the same HR within a few beats. The big plus for Garmin is their strap has a stronger signal giving a longer reception range of 9-10ft compared to 3ft for Polar.

Thank you very much for the photos.  I've been considering switching
to a mohair girth--do you think one could still succeed in attaching
the band that way--perhaps by sewing in a strip to which the moniter
could be glued?
Thank you very much for truly useful information!

Using your girth would depend on the buckle system it uses. The HRM strap works best when entirely up on the side of the horse with no part down near the midline. The lower down the strap is the more weird heart rates occur and the tighter the cinch needs to be to prevent them.
