I’ve tried sewing rips in my horse
blankets by hand, but when the rip is long (and the fabric is heavy) it takes
for-ever. Especially if you try to do small, tight stitches. I still stand by
the local shoe shop. The last rip was a pretty good one… think the shoe
shop fixed it for about three dollars on their heavy-duty machine. That’s
some stitching that won’t come loose in a lifetime! ;-)

I've always done mine by
hand & use dental floss for thread. Floss is the strongest thing I've
found:never have had to re-repair anything I've sewn w/ it. Including saddle
bags.
