RE: [RC] Tips for a smooth start? - Maryben Stover
The first horse I rode on endurance belonged to Courtney Hart and was 5 years old. At the old Drakes Bay the riders were started in groups according to weight. I was in about the 5th group to go and was just sitting there when Becky noticed that Jorah was asleep. She actually had her eyes closed and was nodding off at the start. I actually had to shake her reins to get her started.

Strategies I've heard for easing the stress of the start:
• Ride the first couple miles the day before. • Have at least one buddy from home start with you. • Start in the middle or at the back of the pack. • Warm up thoroughly and don't hover at the start gate.
I'm wondering if there are any other tricks to consider. Anybody start out jogging the first mile/s and mount after that? Do a bunch of TTouches? Feed a heavy breakfast? Ketamine? :) I'll try just about anything once.
Also, do most horses get over the craziness at the start, or should I look forward to 20 more years of fighting this particular battle?
Thx, Ruth
