It's not just about the horse. If you relax yourself, breathe deeply, sit deeply in the saddle and don't get uptight, then your horse has the "psychic space" to calm down. Imagine what it must be like for a horse to be in the middle of a bunch of horses that are jazzed up and on top of that have a tense rider on his back, no doubt hauling back on the reins and gripping for dear life with the legs. Rather like a predator on his back, you know?
