[RC] Tips for a smooth start? - Ruth Maher

Strategies I've heard for easing the stress of the start:

• Ride the first couple miles the day before.
• Have at least one buddy from home start with you.
• Start in the middle or at the back of the pack.
• Warm up thoroughly and don't hover at the start gate.

I'm wondering if there are any other tricks to consider. Anybody start out jogging the first mile/s and mount after that? Do a bunch of TTouches? Feed a heavy breakfast? Ketamine? :) I'll try just about anything once.

Also, do most horses get over the craziness at the start, or should I look forward to 20 more years of fighting this particular battle?

Thx,
Ruth
