Re: [RC] abscess or tendon? - rides2far@xxxxxxxxI already knew not to poke at it or try to drain it (Leo's was waaay too deep to mess with--not anywhere near a surface that could be pricked open with a light touch). I've dealt with at least dozen (maybe two dozen) abscesses between my own horses and helping neighbor horses. I have never had one that we didn't get to drain out the bottom. I remember my uncle saying his mare had a "gravel" and it would have to come out at the coronary band and would take a LONG time. Took me a while to learn differently. If the abscess *started* on the bottom it can drain on the bottom in my experience. They poke a hole, and the infection starts. My farriers have been MUCH better at draining them than vets. I'm not as good since I'm scared to go very deep. I find the spot with testers and do some scraping, then cover it with ichthammol & wrap. Eventually, it kind of seems to meet me half way. I scrap a little every day or so and it finally drains. The farrier has a better feel for how deep is safe to go and can do a little more. The horse we had on anti-biotics was a bit of an exception. His was big and had lingered and we wanted to make darned sure it didn't get into the coffin bone. Normally I just make sure the tetenous is up to date.
