RE: [RC] Heart Monitors - paulHi Mary, As a fellow idiot, let me reassure you that you, and your horse, can both survive doing Endurance Riding without having a heart monitor. I had a hand held Polar unit and used it when I first got started at vet checks, and after training to see how long it took my horses heart rate to drop after a workout. It was interesting to see this. After doing a few 100's I bought a Vmax on board unit. It works fine, but my riding philosophy is KISS, (keep it simple stupid), so I use it very rarely. Like yourself, I prefer to monitor my horses state of being by paying attention as much as possible. The most interesting thing I found from using it was that my horses heart rate does drop while cantering compared to trotting. My feeling is that if you are wanting to be a top regional or national level horse, then a heart rate monitor might be a useful tool. If you are just out there having fun and completing, then you probably do not need one. Paul N.
