Re: [RC] abscess or tendon? - Elizabeth Walker

I would tend to vote abscess as well (I'm assuming front leg).  I would try soaking in hot water w/ epsom salts to help things along.

Let's play guess the lameness issue! :)

So here's the story - horse started doing the 3 legged dance a couple weeks ago.  At first was just keeping the weight off, then couple days later, leg was swollen from hoof near to teh hock.  Farrier found abscess near the toe, got  a little to drain, nothing more since about a week ago.

Swelling has come down quite a bit since then and she is now trotting on it nearly sound, some head bobbing on turns.  There is still some puffiness in the ankle and some heat in it.  She is currenlty in a stall with small arena (sand) turnout at night.

So considering her current symptoms (swelling + heat) could those still be signs of abscess?  Or would the heat only come with a tendon injury?  I've heard others say their horses got quite a bit of swelling with an abscess, but not sure if there was heat with it too.

Have been doing bute.  if it's an abscess and traveling up the hoof, would any of teh hoof packs help draw it out at all at this point?  If it's up high?

Advice welcome!

thx
cindy
