[RC] Method of Feeding Beet Pulp (was: What I learned) - k s swigartTerry said: Most horse-boarding facilities won't soak beet pulp pellets ?for you, so the shreds still have value. I fill 1-gal. Zip-Loc ?baggies with the loose beet pulp, along with any?powdered ?vit/min supplements,?and they just dump it in?my horse's ?feed bin 2xday and pour (a child's sand bucket) water over it. You can, if you want, feed beet pulp pellets in exactly this same fashion (except your baggies will only have to be the 1/2 gallon size, because the pellets take up less room). Beet pulp does not have to be soaked for an extended period of time before feeding it to a horse.? If you don't want to feed the stuff dry, then add the water when you put it in the horse's feed bucket. If the horse doesn't like it that way so turns its nose up at?it while it is water and pellets, after a while (probably about 1/2 an hour)?the pellets will have soaked up the water ... voila, soaked beet pulp pellets...and it was the horse that did the waiting?not the person doing the feeding.? If the horse doesn't mind getting them that way and is willing to eat the pellets and drink the water before all the water is absorbed by the pellets, then the pellets will be "soaking" in the horse's stomach. The fact of the matter is, if the boarding faclity is willing to add water for you when they give it to the horse, they ARE soaking the pellets, either in the bucket after it is put in the horse's stall, or in the horses stomach after thehorse has moved them from the bucket to its stomach. And if you are worried about choke, well...the water in the bucket slows the horse down in its feeding. This idea that beet pulp pellets need to be soaked for hours before feeding them to a horse is pure fantasy. kat Orange County, Calif. :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
