Angie:

Get some 5/8 cotton rope and do an eye splice in one end.
Then use a carabiner in place of a bull snap. Makes it much
easier and safer.

I can't sleep if my picket line *isn't* attached to the
trailer.  That
thing is like a telegraph line. I can hear the ring zip down
the line and
know all is well.  Also know that if he's in trouble I'll
know
immediately.  In the last 7 years Kaboot has never so much
as gotten a
leg over his picketline rope...but I'm CAREFUL!  I'm amazed
at the people
who have sagging lines that the horse has to duck to go
under, and lead
ropes that are touching the ground.  I keep mine tight, and
the snap
hangs 6" from the ground when hanging straight down.  I
always use a lead
with a bullsnap to attach to the horse.  I'd prefer a cotton
lead just in
case he ever did get caught in it, but I've never found one
with anything
better than a cheap chrome snap.  Honestly the two best
things I've done
to sleep better at rides were to take him out of a corral
and onto a
picket line and buy 2 alarm clocks so I won't be so paranoid
that it
won't go off.
