Tying Up Research Funded
The Morris Foundation is funding a new
study:
"Stephanie Valberg, DVM, PhD, at the University
of
Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine, is
conducting
a two-year study labeled "Glucose Transporter
Regulation
in Equine Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy."
Tying-up
occurs commonly in Quarter Horses and related
breeds
and results from an inability to properly
metabolize glycogen
and sugars in muscles. This study will focus
on identifying the
exact cellular biochemical defects responsible for
the
condition in order to target specific
treatments. In addition,
the investigators will develop a DNA-based
diagnostic
blood test using their molecular genetic
studies."
Morris Foundation press release.
The article doesn't say how much $$ the Morris
Foundation
is giving them. Morris has lots of money
($3.7 million
annually) but tends to spread it pretty
thin.
