The first UAE Man vs. Horse race was an exciting event, which took place the
day before the 160 km President's Cup race. Tom Johnson won the match race
by a mere 10 seconds. As the horse was required to take two vet stops, Tom
had a chance to take the lead after the first 32 km loop, and remained in
the lead to the end. Even though the organizers decided to cut the second
vet hold in half (from 40 minutes, to 20 minutes), it was not enough to give
the horse a chance to catch tom. It was a gallop/sprint for the finish. I
was about 2-3 km out when Tom was about 1-km from the finish.
Several news reports that I have read have included some inaccuracies. First
of all, Tom was never "challenged" by any camels, and I did not gallop the
last 16 km "flat out," I only galloped the last 4 km, which was along a
track. The speeds for the horse averaged about 16 km for each of the first
two loops and about 20 km for the last loop.

President's cup results: 16 of 47 competitors completed the event. Heather
Bergantz finished 11th, Marcia smith was 14th and Hal Hall was 15th.
Heather's horse was the first foreign horse to finish. It was an incredible
day with 100 percent completion for the US team. A complete article and
