Re: [RC] [RC] Suggestions for feeding 7 month filly - Laurie Durgin
I fed my colt Youth Nutrena and our round bale. Vet said not to give him
more than 12% protein grain. 1-1.5 lbs per 100 wt. body weight. (He is now
15.1 and 18 months). No extra suppliments or fancy hays. Laurie

Subject: [RC] Suggestions for feeding 7 month filly

Hi all,
Well, today was my birthday and to my surprise I received a 7 month old
Paint filly as a gift. She is still at the breeder's right now, she will be
delivered on January 3. Gives me a little time to get ready for her and she
needs to be weaned. Right now she is eating hay and 13% Omolene. At the
barn where I will board her, it is all adult horses and they eat hay
(grass) as well as a combination of Omolene, alfalfa hay cubes, and a
little bran. I don't want to change her diet drastically, but would a
complete feed for young horses be better? The feed place where I go carries
Purina brands, so I am sure they have a complete feed for young horses.
What I'm wondering is how long should she be fed as a "young" horse rather
than an adult horse? and what are the best options? I just want to grow a
healthy horse that can eventually do competitive trail and endurance if she
is up to it, not a heavy-duty, bulked up halter horse. :) I've only ever
had to feed adult horses, this is my first baby, so I am all worried about
feeding her right.
Lysane
