[RC] horse registry (morab, nsh, etc) - Jon . Linderman
On a broader issue of horse registration it is interesting what one poster
stated regarding breeding/registration:
> "Me? I could care less about either "registry."
> If I want to breed a Morgan to an Arab, then,
> as far as I'm concerned, I've got "a Morab."
I am not wholey familar w/the all the Morab issues, but having what is know
as a "straight" or "pure" National Show Horse (http://www.nshregistry.org)
I do understand a bit about confusion AND about reluctance to join breed
organizations if your goal is endurance. On many occasions I have heard
people say "I have a NSH", even know of people who write NSH on their entry
form for events, but n fact what they have is a 1/2 saddlebred 1/2 arab,
that COULD be a NSH, or maybe not. A small blurb of a press release I
wrote for the NSHR was printed it the back of Endurance News issue before
last & I have mentioned a few times on this site that there are
opportunities for people who own saddlebred/arab crosses ranging from 75/25
(asb/arab) to 90/10 (arab/asb) to register unregistered crosses. Until May
of this year the registration fee is dramatically reduced & this year there
was a small sport horse program that I sponsored and would like to see
grow.
The question I usually get when I contact people who have unregistered or
untransfered NSH's, is why should I register my horse? I think association
w/a distnct breed as Ted indicated ("According to the United States
Department of Agriculture, Handbook #394, "A breed of horse may be defined
as a group of horses of common origin and possessing certain, well-defined,
distinctive, uniformly transmitted characteristics that are not common to
other horses ..." ) as well as the perpetuation/promotion of that breed is
also important. Perhaps other of you coould make a better case, whatever
the breed, than I.
In the case of the NSH there was backlash this year that our breed is not a
breed at all, inspite of the fact that the very specific characterisitcs of
registry (arab/asb mix) have been in place over 20 years. The argument has
been made that the NSH is really about motion, specifically "english"
motion and there was an effort to introduce the dutch harness horse,
hackney, and others into the breed. Within the NSHR an new "Alliance" was
developed which does not affect the NSH as defined, but forms another very
open breeding opportunity for people who want to have asb/arab/DHH crosses.
Please if any of you have untransferred, or unregistered NSH's please
consider association w/the NSH, or contact me so I can keep you abreast of
any opportunities for you. For people like me who have horses that are the
rebreeding of 1/2 arab 1/2 saddlebreds, the 1/2 arab or 1/2 asb registries
are not options, so of course I have some passion for this registry.
Hey there is always the int. generic horse association too!
