Re: [RC] Road riding - DESERTRYDR1

I condition on bike trails, and we often see bikers. Whenever I see one I
haven't seen before (I often see them at the parking spot) I stop to pass the
time a little. then I ask them if they know what to do if they come up on a
horse and rider. Most of them don't and are happy for the education. They
have regular mountain bike races in spring and fall at both of my favorite
conditioning sites, and I always ask when the races will start, and how they
marked their trails so I can be careful to get out of the way. There are so
many different trails at one site that it's pretty easy for us all to
coexist, even on a race day.
Only one time have I had a biker go zipping by with no warning, and sure
enough, our horses spooked a bit (spook in place). A few minutes later his
buddy came by going much slower, and stopped to chat. I was pretty mad, and
told him how RUDE I thought his friend was, and talked about what to do
around horses. Well, the second guy must have really let the first guy have
it, because when we got back to the parking spot, the first guy came hustling
over to apologize. He told us that by the time he noticed us, he was pretty
close, so he figured the best thing was to just keep going without saying
anything. He was more than happy to find out what to do next time. jeri
