While this is true, let me clarify my previous comments on night
riding. Although visibility is of course better in open areas with
moonlight, everything I said about the virtues of riding without a
flashlight or helmet light applies to riding in the woods on a
moonless night. That, in fact, is where I did most of my own night
riding. I do carry a flashlight -- a small mini-mag light that uses
two AA batteries -- which I turn on when I need to check a trail
marking, or to use if there is a stretch of trail where using
supplemental light is unavoidable. It is bright enough to do the job,
and dim enough to not ruin our night vision.
What I hate most of all, is having someone behind me with a helmet
light. If they won't turn it off I will do whatever it takes to get
out of that situation!
