Re: [RC] head lamps - AprJhn
This is the kind I bought. Cost me $30 at REI. Might could get it
cheaper elsewhere, but I wanted it then! :) Anyway, I love mine. I
bought it for riding in the dark and use it for other stuff now, too.
It's very nice. When riding in the dark, I put it on the browband of
Serts' bridle. Very funny reactions from him the first time he wore it!
Not scary, just funny, but then he's a very well-broke horse. We started
riding in the light and as it progressively got darker, the light was
just always there. I haven't had the nerve to ride Tanna in the dark
with it. That would be scary without some ground work with him first!
But the reason I got it wasn't for seeing, as much as to be seen. When I
rode without this on my horse's bridle, the cars on the road wouldn't be
able to see me very well or know what was going on even with blinking
red lights. When I ride with the headlamp on the browband, the cars slow
down and give me room (what IS that bobbing white light? UFO??). Lots
more visibility = lots more safety. I also use blinking red lights on my
back for the people coming up from behind.

The best headlamps I have found are Petzls,
particularly the Tikki model. Mostly used for other
sports (which I do), but very handy for night rides as
well!
