| [RC] Help for Un-ridable Horse - Tamara Taylor
 Hello there,
Thanks to everyone who has responded to my post.
At this point I am not sure what I will do with this horse. I do have my own
horse (a 13 yr old Arab x gelding). I've been riding him for 10 years and will
continue to ride him. He is my primary horse and my endurance horse.
The 6 year old auction-mart gelding is a project. I don't need him to be ready
for an endurance ride or anything like that. I'm in no rush to get him going.
The only consideration is that I'm in university so perhaps I'll have to sell
him for financial reasons. In that case I am not sure how far along our
reschooling will be and if I should attempt to sell him privately. Hopefully an
experienced rider will come along looking for a project.
One thing that stuck out in my mind with each of the times he turfed a rider is
that they were doing sitting trot and bumping his back rather heavily (he is
bouncy). They also had rather long reins. When I ride him I always post at the
trot and keep a soft contact so if he starts to rush I can gently slow him down
with my seat and the reins. The bumping of his back and the loose reins are now
a recipe for disaster, as I can now see. There may be some truth in the back
pain issue. I will have that looked at. Both riders that were turfed were
western riders (one male, one female), and sitting trot/loose reins is a habit
for them. Buddy was trained western, so perhaps that's why he ended up at the
auction. Anyone sitting the trot on him would get thrown. Just a thought.
Thanks for all of your responses.
Tamara
