Re: [RC] Finish Line question for LD Riders - Heidi Smith

I have to agree with the viewpoint that the sport is competitive and has
boundaries, and that there is no point in pushing those boundaries back. We
have horses OT on other distances as well, and we don't rewrite the rules to
give them more time. In most cases, when one subtracts the hold times from
the elapsed times, the LD rider can still actually travel more slowly on
average than can the tail-end 50-miler or 100-miler. Yes, stuff can happen
at any given ride that causes one to be hard-pressed at the end to make the
time--regardless of the distance. I'd like to see the rules left alone, and
perhaps encourage ride managers of OT LD riders to do what many RM's in our
area do--go ahead and give the rider the ride's completion award for getting
over the course, while explaining that the rider was OT and reporting the
rider as such, so that no points or mileage are awarded, but this makes a
newbie rider that is OT at least feel welcome and "rewarded" for having
tried and gotten over the course with a sound horse, and more apt to try
    again.

    Heidi
