Rating a hot or young horse at the start of the ride is so tough. Two
things have worked for me. The best thing I ever did was a year of
dressage lessons with my young endurance horse. I resisted this idea for
twenty years and 6,000 miles. Boy, do I wish I had tried this sooner! I
was finally able to ride a horse with a snaffle bit and feel totally in
control even at the start of a ride. The other thing, has been shared
often, but it does work, and that's to start even 5 mins. behind the pack.
I also do very slow 50s with young horses, around 8-9 hours for their
first year. It really helps their brain and prevents you from making dumb
mistakes. I do not do 25 milers at all. Cindy
