[RC] RC: popped splint? - Magnumsmom

    Hi Amy,

Splints are 99.99% of the time nothing to worry
about for the long term. Rarely a splint might
intefear with a tendon and then surgery or a
more involved treatment might be indicated. She
will probably heal up just fine. I would think
if this splint was in a problem place your vet
would have already mentioned the fact. It's
probably along one side or the other of the cannon
bone, right? Location of the splint is key.

Anti-inflamitories are good. MSM, bute, ice, cold
hosing. I think you said you wrapped it. If she
is not taking to stall rest, make sure to cut her
back to just grass hay and water and whatever
vitamin / mineral supplement you are using. It
should heal up and fuse with the cannon bone and
then be fine. Once healed, it will probably
continue to decrease in size for as long as a year
    or two.

Magnum wasn't penned up when he popped his at age
    14. Matter of fact, I couldn't even keep him in
the flat pasture. He jumped the fence to get back
to the big hilly pasture with the rest of his friends.
7 weeks off and we were back to light riding. Never
    has been an issue.

Probably nothing to worry about for Tequiza's long
term future unless your vet says otherwise. Enjoy
your time off with tons of carrots and grooming.
