my husband built a plywood box around an old bathtub,with hinged top. we insulated it with sawdust,cut a hole the size of the top of a bucket in one end of the lid.then on the inside of the lid,he put in a hook to hang a floating water heater on,the cord passes through a small hole at the other end of the lid (the cord is inside metal tube) and the plug in is out of reach from the horses. even when the temps drop below 30c,the water does not freeze.
