[RC] beet pulp?? - Kelly
I have a couple more questions about beet pulp
and feed in general. Everyone here was really
helpful with my first batch of questions, so I
was hoping someone could help me out again. We
feed our horses a manufactured pellet feed called
Horseman's Edge 12...I'm sure this isn't the best
out there, but I didn't want to try to make my
own "balanced diet" and really screw it up! I'd
heard a lot of great things about beet pulp, and
finally found some to try. I had been feeding the
pellets soaked to just get some more water into
the horses and to try and lower the chances of
them choking. I really love how much water the
beet pulp can soak in! I had no idea. My question
is though, if I'm feeding 2-3 pounds of the
balanced pellets, is adding in the beet pulp
going to through everything out of whack? I'm not
giving them very much yet, and have been adding
it in very slowly. I'm not even up to a pound yet
I dont think. Also, when then water is all
soaked in, the feed almost triples in size. I've
always heard it's best to feed smaller amounts of
grain. The amount of actual grain is small, but
the water makes it swell up so much I was
wondering if this is too much for their stomachs
at once? The horses are turned out 24/7 on a nice
grass pasture, and I am only able to feed them
grain once a day. They are a good weight and are
ridden regularly, usually long slow trailrides.
This this is ok? Any opinions? Thanks so much!
-Kelly
