pre purchase (or not) story
I once bought a horse from a 'famous' name ranch. This mare was the full
sister to a VERY famous endurance horse, nine years old and unbroke. I was
so thrilled that they offered to sell her to me, I rushed the 1500 miles to
pick her up. Everything went well with training and I took her to her first
endurance ride, about a year after I got her.
During the vet in, the vet, (Art King) asked me how long she had had the
heart problem!!! She had an arrythmia that I did not know about, because no
one had ever listened to her heart! It was severe and did not change with
excercise. I had at least 8 vets listen to her that weekend, and they all
just shook their heads.
After the ride weekend I took the mare to a local vet for an EKG, and it
wasn't good news. BUT the vet asked me out and a year later I married him!!!
So, pre purchases are a good thing, but I am glad I didn't prepurchase this
mare!! Needless to say, she never started a ride. I gave her away as a
pet, and she is still well 14 years later. Of course, the ranch owners did
not know about the problem, and offered to take her back, but I knew she
would go to the killers (she was barren) and I never took her back, even
though they offered to replace her.
