We had a
horse given the vaccine because he was going to a ranch for training that had
had strangles earlier in the year.
We thought we’d be ok, but didn’t want to take a chance. We timed everything properly so there
was enough time before he went to the ranch and gave the intranasal with no
other vaccinations or shot. About
3 days after the horse got to the ranch, he had a serious case of the
snots. But then 2 days later he
was fine and 3 days later began his training again. So we don’t know for sure if he got strangles, versus some
other nasty bug, considering there were horses coming to the ranch all the
time. But whatever it was, went
away very fast, so if it was strangles, he would likely have been worse off without
the vaccination.
But given
everything else I’ve read, I think I’d almost rather have the horse end up with
strangles and just get over it if that was an option.
