I tried that once--it was the worst!! The ice stuck to the bottom of the
hoof, balled up faster and was more difficult to remove. Don't use WD40 for
this, it does not work.
I have friends who use those rubber half pad things put on the hoof when
the horse is shod, sorta like a pad, but made just for keeping snow out the
hoof. They really like them and feel they work well. Can't remember the
name of the pads though.
