[RC] [RC] Black oil sunflower seeds - Deanna German
One of the boarders at my barn feeds sunflower seeds still in the hull. Her
horse happily eats them with no ill effects that I can tell. OTOH, I can't
really tell that they are doing him any good either.
One nice side effect is that we've had some volunteer sunflowers sprout in
the dry lot!
I started feeding corn oil to boost my horse's calories during the
competitive season this last year. To make it easier on whomever is doing
the feeding, get a big squirt bottle -- foodservice sized like what is used
for serve yourself ketchup and mustard. A quart bottle is not big enough, I
tried that. You can premeasure the number of squirts so it's a lot less
guesswork than "glugs" and a lot easier than using a measuring cup.
Or, I bet that somewhere there is just the squirter part that could be
attached directly to the bottle of oil.
Feeding the oil put an obvious "bloom" on my mare's coat and she maintained
her weight well throughout the competitive season.
