[RC] Competing with Low Thyroid Condition? - Hopkins, Lorretta J.
My wonderful Arab (First MPulse) was recently diagnosed with low thyroid.
I had his blood tested because there were just too many little things
that did not seem right. I'm pretty sure he's had
the condition since I purchased him 5 yrs. ago. He'll be 14 in March.
It sure explains a lot - he has had all of the symptoms I could find.
I'm not sure just what sort of damage I've
done to him with the conditioning and training we've done for the
past three years. Or what his prognosis might be.
Anyway, he's improving with the medication after only 2 weeks.
Do you know if horses on thyroid medication are able/allowed to
compete in CTR or endurance rides with this type of
condition? If so, what sort of advice do you recommend? If they compete,
are they allowed to receive the medication during the competition?
He does like to compete, and loves the trail. Long rides may not be in his
future.
Any help/ideas/shared info/knowledge or experience would be very gratefully
received.
Thanks very much,
Lorretta Hopkins
