Subject: [RC] HRM and Stethoscopes
I've used HRM and think they are wonderful as a means to "check in" on the number of beats per minute, the effect of terrain and speed on the number of beats, etc. But there is more to the heart rate of an endurance athlete than a number. The quality of valvular competence and the rhythm/regularity of the heartbeat are so integral that I believe every endurance rider should invest in a quality stethoscope that enables them to become familiar with their horse's particular cardiac cycle at rest, at work and when stressed. I think riders should be familiar with any tool out there that will help them help their horses stay healthy and enjoy the sport. A quality stethoscope, properly used, is such a tool. Frank
