Re: [RC] UC Davis tendon rehab schedule - Magnumsmom
Rest, rest, rest. Ice, etc. Hand walking... lots of pets
and brushes. Magnum went pretty much bonkers in his
pen when we were dealing with his suspensory. He was
stabled between two other TBs and they were always a
source of entertainment for him. Then again, I had to hot
wire his pipe pen since he took down one of the panels...
and pretty much trashed it. After that day he had 3
swollen legs and 1 good one instead of the other way
around. I'm not sure you can over do the hand grazing
aspect as long as she's not fat and as long as she doesn't
get away. Also, cut her back to just grass or oat hay
and water... no grain, no alfalfa. Supplements in a bit
of chopped hay or a very few oat pellets is OK for her
"treat".
The good news is there is always hope and I was amazed
at how good the old warrior ex-racer TB's legs looked
after his 11 months of rest / reahab. His legs really
came around... swelling and puffiness went away in other
non-injured areas and didn't come back. It really brought
home to me how much simple rest can do for our horses
which is a good thing to remember during the off season.
Much luck with your mare! Please let me know if you have
any other questions. I did buy Magnum a toy or two but
he was much happier playing bitey face with his stall mates.
Oh, and he was at a stable where student, friends, and just
about everyone would come by with a carrot and just pet
him several times a day.
