AW: [RC] UC Davis tendon rehab schedule - Hilga Boskamp
We did exactly that when my horse had a realy badly bowed tendon just at the
start of the 2000 season.
The vet warned me, that it might never heal properly, so she might be able
to do light work, but certainly no more endurance.
We followed a plan similar to this, and after that the season was almost
over anyway, so some light riding that winter and (always fretting "is she
still sound????") sone easy training next spring.
She did her first 100 later that following season 2001, and she did very
well (placing fifth in German Championship).
We had some lamenes issues after that, but ultrasound always showed it not
to be the tendon (mostly hoof problems).
So even if my vet still can´t believe it, that tendon can be declared
healed, and we are looking forward to many more miles (pref. long and
reasonably fast) in many more years to come.
If anyone is interested in details of that experience (special
feedsupplements, how to keep a fully trained horse calm when
handwalking...)email me.
Best regards
Hilga

Betreff: Re: [RC] UC Davis tendon rehab schedule
I'm heading out on the trail this morning but I have several
anectodal stories about how well this works including a few
years ago when Blue had an injury to the tendon sheath in
his right rear... which healed up and has not given him any
trouble at all ever since. Please let me know if you have
any questions,
Kathy Myers
in Santa Fe, NM
ps... what I need is a "UC Davis Root Canal Rehab Schedule"
for grumpy husbands...
************************
The UC Davis tendon rehab:
All Flat! No Hills! Period.
6 to 8 weeks total rest in a 20 x 40 flat paddock
and hand walking 20 minutes once or twice a day.
Paddock must not allow the horse to run in circles.
Hand walking is important.
If horse trots fine and ultrasound is clear after
6 to 8 weeks (depending on vet) start:
Week 1: Walk 20 minutes under saddle 4 times a week.
Week 2: Walk 25 minutes...
.. add 5 minutes of walking under saddle per week
until horse is up to walking for 1 hour under saddle.
*if* horse goes off, back to square one.
If horse is still sound:
start adding trotting under saddle 5 minutes.
Add 5 minutes of trotting under saddle each week
until horse can do unlimited walking and trotting
under saddle on the flat and is still sound.
(I figure for most people 30 minutes of trotting
is "unlimited" trotting).
*if* horse goes off, back to square one.
If horse is still sound:
Add back the canter on the flat.
*if* horse goes off, back to square one.
If horse is still sound:
You can add back hills, turn horse out, and horse
is considered recovered.
This works. It takes patience. But if you try
to rush a tendon injury you risk having it not
heal and then having intermittent lameness issues.
