The "common sense" you speak of, when all the fear, all the video-acquired "knowledge", all the clinic-acquired "knowledge", all the book-acquired "knowledge" and all the Ridecamp-acquired "knowledge" is pared down, is the best place to start.
If someone cannot start there, the rest of it won't ever make any sense or difference in the life of a horse with people.
