[RC] English boots v. paddocks and half-chaps - Linda B. Merims

There was a kind of high boot very popular in
the 1960's and the decades previous called a
"Newmarket Boot."  It had a leather shoe part,
and then a canvas upper, with leather protecting
    the inside calf.

They were an informal boot intended for
summer use.  For a short while in the 70's
people were even using them in the show
ring, but I gather that the rule changes
that tightened the regs on what was
acceptable show ring hunter attire put
    an end to that.

    I havn't seem anybody offer a Newmarket
boot in the US for decades.  They can still
be gotten from English tack shops, e.g.:

Just an historical note...  I seem to be
keen on the history of riding attire fashion
right now.  Personally, I use sneakers and
    half-chaps.
