Gee Steve, You must have never owned a mare, particularly an alpha mare.  
They don't take kindly to having strange horses getting close to them, trying 
to eat their food, etc.  I would never even tie my mare next to a strange 
horse unless I was absolutely sure that there was no way they could make any 
kind of physical contact.  Even sharing a water trough is kind of pushing it.
