On the contrary, we selected the lines of Arabs that we have precisely
because they DO think situations through, and look before they leap.
Selection is the FIRST step in avoiding problems, and when one selects
horses that engage their brains and have good "people" personalities, the
training not to panic is simply a matter of reinforcing their general
demeanor. Where the hard-core training techniques come in is for the
horses that aren't naturally "strung" that way, and in some cases, NO
amount of training will overcome the panic response. The older I get, the
more convinced I am that life is too short to even mess with those.
Heidi (who has found sane ones and crazy idiots in pretty much every
breed, but who has also found that both sanity and craziness both tend to
run in families...)
