Re: [RC] What is the science about not using rice bran and oil together? - Maggie Mieske
Tom,
I use oil instead of rice bran because oil is 100% fat (almost totally
digestible) and rice bran is 20% fat. So, you have to feed almost 5 times
as much rice bran. Oil is much cheaper...granted, some horses won't like
oil but I have found all of my horses love oil and beet pulp so have no
troubles. It just makes economic sense. How much is rice bran? $25 or
more for a 50# bag? I can get 5 gallons of oil at a food service store
(Gordon's here in Michigan) for about half of that. ($13.85 last time I
checked). That is 80 cups of oil approximately. How many cups of rice
bran would be in 50#? I don't know what its density is. And even then (if
it were comparable, rice bran is only 20% fat). Susan can probably give us
better figures for this because I am NOT a math whiz. I have also heard not
to mix the two but not sure where and would imagine it might come from
manufacturers who would rather we feed our horses 5 times as much rice bran
to our horses than to cut down or eliminate it in favor of oil.
By the way, where could I get the research vet's info on her study? I am
always interested in reading that kind of stuff. Thanks!
Maggie
