Supposedly, horses are very comfortable at
temperatures between 35 and 50 F...temps quite a bit cooler than what is most
comfortable for humans (and as long as it’s not a cold, driving rain.)
We’ve had a couple of boarders a while back
who wanted to pile multiple layers of blankets, complete with matching hoods,
on their horses when the temps got down to about 40 and *they* (the humans)
were cold. It took a while, but we were finally successful in convincing
them that dear Dobbins was sweating up a storm under all of that quilting and
would be better off with just a light, waterproof sheet for the coldest, rainy
days. One of the boarders even wanted us to close the dutch doors from
the stall to the paddock so the horse *couldn’t* go outside and catch
cold -- and that was with the horse dressed 6” thick in blanket and hood!
We had to call her and tell her that we were not going to close the doors and
were, in fact, removing some of his clothing cuz he was cooking under the
blankets. She was tough to convince but we were eventually successful.
